Background
The work of Schwartz and his more than 50 collaboraters (references) represents one of the most important contributions in the area of current intercultural research. It can be regarded as a crucial further development and extension of previous approaches to comparative intercultural research with respect to the methodology and theory. The Schwartz Value Survey (SVS), contains 57 Items which represent 10 value types on a individual level and 7 value orientations on the cultural level.
In order to avoid a cultural (ethnocentric) bias, values of all world-religions and items from cultural-specific questionnaires (e.g. Asia, Africa) where incorporated into its construction. The survey involved more than 60000 individuals in 64 nations on all continents The results contributed among other things to validate this instrument.

Structure
The SVS is composed of three parts: Two value lists and one part with demographical questions.
The two value lists contain overall 57 items in terms of value descriptions. The task is to rate how important each value is for the respondent as a guiding principle in life. The importance is rated on a scale between 0 (not at all important) and 6 (very important). Additionally outstanding values which are either opposed to the respondents principles or which are regarded "of supreme importance", can be rated with -1 respectively 7 on the scale.

Ten values on the individual level in terms of "motivational types of values and their goals" are distingueshed from seven cultural orientations: While all ten motivational dimensions are found in every culture, the level of importance of each dimension varies from one culture to the next.

Application: Training & Research
Originally the SVS was developed for research purposes. For the first time we have now the opportunity to to apply this questionnaire, a validated research instrument, as a powerful training tool too.
Displaying the individual value profile or the comparision of cultural value dimensions between different countries and regions or groups (i.e. a working teams) helps to understand the context of intercultural meanings at the workplace or in private life and establish fruitful and effective relations.
